Old Melburnians Council Members 2009

Simon Derham Simon Derham (OM 1973)
President
Member of Council 1989-1992 Rejoined Council 2002

Simon was at MGS from 1962 to 1973, at both at Wadhurst and Senior School and was a House Officer in Rusden House in his final year. Simon is a Licensed Real Estate Agent and Auctioneer with Hocking Stuart Pty Ltd in Richmond. This is Simon's second appointment to Council and has actively been involved in both the OMs Lodge and the OMs Football Club. Simon and his wife Kim have two sons Oliver and George both of whom are future students at MGS. Simon can be contacted at sderham@hockingstuart.com.au.
Nigel Thompson Nigel Thompson (OM 1969)

Member of Council since 2001

Nigel was at MGS from 1957 to 1969 and attended Grimwade House and Senior School. He was Vice Captain and House Officer for Morris House in his final year. Nigel is a Management Consultant with Right Management Consultants. Nigel is married to Janet with a son at MGS and James (OM 2003) who completed schooling in 2003.
John Whittington

John Whittington (OM 1979)

John entered Wadhurst in 1968 and joined Senior School in 1976 as a member of Bromby House. He was active in school dramatic productions and was a member of the athletics team and a sergeant in cadets.  John completed a Bachelor of Science at Melbourne University and later completed both a Graduate Diploma in Marketing at Monash and a MBA at AGSM (University of NSW). John started his career with ICI then moved onto senior marketing roles in Telstra and Nokia which involved working overseas for a number of years, during which time was OM Singapore branch convenor and a member of the London branch.  John returned to Melbourne in 2005 with his wife Shirley to set up their own marketing consulting firm Howlett Whittington Partners (www.howlettwhittington.com).  John is also a licensed pilot and is currently Chairman of the Australian Region of the Guild of Air Pilots and Air Navigators.

Stephen Gibbons   Stephen Gibbons (OM 1979)
Immediate Past President
Member of Council since 2000

Stephen Gibbons attended MGS from 1974 to 1979 and attended both Grimwade House and Senior School. Stephen is a Consultant Maxillofacial Surgeon. Stephen has three children all of whom attend MGS.
     
 

Ameet Bains (OM 1995)
Member of Council 1996-1997 Rejoined Council 2005

Entered Senior School in 1992 as a boarder in School House and was School Captain in his final year. Ameet played in the 1st XVIII Football team from 1993 and was Vice Captain of the APS Premiership winning team in 1995. Ameet also played cricket and captained the 2nd XI. Ameet works as a solicitor.
     
Nick Batrouney Nick Batrouney (OM 1989)
Member of Council since 2002

Nick was at MGS from 1981 to 1989 and was at both Wadhurst and Senior School. He was a member of Bromby House and was House Captain of Cross Country in his final year. Nick is a financial consultant with UBS Warburg. In his role as Secretary/ Treasurer, Nick is part of the Finance Working Party. Nick is married to Samantha and have two children, son Charlie who is a future student and daughter Isabel.

Jack Hawkins (OM 1972)
Member of Council since 2004

Jack entered Senior School in 1969 and was a member of Perry House. Jack was a member of the 1st XI and was Captain in 1972. He played in the 1st XVIII from 1970-72. Jack played for the Geelong Football Club from 1973 to 1981 and represented Victoria in the VFL in 1979. Jack is a farmer in Finley and has one son who attended MGS.

Philip Solomon

Philip Solomon (OM 1986)
Member of Council since 2006

Philip entered Grimwade in 1975 joining the Senior School in 1983; as a member of Bromby House Philip was a member of the 2nd VIII Tennis. Philip went on to study Commerce/Law at Melbourne University 1987. Phillip also continued his studies with a bursary at Cambridge University studying at Queens College. Philip was employed as a solicitor with Arthur Robinson Hederwicks before transferring to the Bar where he works as a barrister. Philip is married to Rachel and has two sons Jack and Ben who are both at Grimwade House.

Ken Velos

Ken Velos (OM 2005)
Member of Council since 2006

Ken entered Wadhurst in 2000 joining the Senior School in 2002 as a member of Miller House. Ken was Captain of School and Captain of Soccer in his final year. Ken joined the Council in 2006 as an ex-officio member and in 2007 became a fully elected member. Ken is studying Arts/Law at Monash University.

Chris Venus  

Chris Venus (OM 2005)
Member of Council since 2006

Chris entered Grimwade in 1993 and joined the Senior School as a member of Ross House in 2002.  In 2005, his final year, he was Vice Captain of the School as well as Captain of Debating and Vice Captain of Swimming. He joined the Council in 2006 as an ex-officio member and in 2007 became a fully elected member.  Chris is studying the double degree of Commerce/Arts (Media & Communications) at Melbourne University and is currently in the second year of these studies.
