Reconciliation Week
Melbourne Grammar School students and students from Worawa Aboriginal College, Healesville celebrated the tenth anniversary of National Reconciliation Week from 27 May – 3 June 2006.
The School’s Student Aboriginal Reconciliation Committee organised Reconciliation Week activities to promote a greater awareness of the need for cooperation, respect and reconciliation between the indigenous community and all other Australians.
During Reconciliation Week Worawa Aboriginal College students visited Melbourne Grammar to undertake art, music and sport activities and Melbourne Grammar students visited Worawa Aboriginal College in Healesville to participate in cultural studies such as art, dance, music and an overnight stay at an outdoor camp.
“Reconciliation Week provides students with the opportunity to focus on reconciliation, learn about the culture and history of Australia’s indigenous people, really experience reconciliation in action and identify ways of moving forward for all Australians,” said Mr Sheahan.
Reconciliation Week activities at the two schools included:
- A flag raising ceremony to hoist the Aboriginal flag above the School’s Witherby Tower – Monday 29 May
- Creating a musical piece using both indigenous and non indigenous instruments, making artworks and playing soccer at Melbourne Grammar’s South Yarra campus – Tuesday 30 May
- Boomerang painting and a boomerang throwing competition, as well as well-known Aboriginal singer Kutcha Edwards (photo below) performing for students – Wednesday 31 May
- Melbourne Grammar students visit Worawa Aboriginal College to camp overnight and participate in boomerang and spear throwing, traditional craft activities and men’s and women’s business discussions – Thursday 1 June
- The finale to Reconciliation Week activities with Aboriginal band The Darlow Show performing for students at Melbourne Grammar School’s South Yarra campus – Friday 2 June.
Melbourne Grammar School has an ongoing commitment to reconciliation issues. A Student Aboriginal Reconciliation Committee was established in 2000, an Indigenous History subject is taught to Year 9 and 10 students, an Aboriginal art gallery was established in 2003, indigenous scholarships are available and the School has an ongoing relationship with Worawa Aboriginal College in Healesville where students from both schools share football, camps and learning experiences. This is the ninth year Reconciliation Week has been celebrated at Melbourne Grammar School.
