Primary students discover the art of film-making Year 4 and 5 students at Melbourne Grammar’s coeducational primary school Grimwade House are embarking on an innovative film-making project, Claymation, to animate plasticine figurines. Working with artist-in-residence filmmaker and animator Joe Cowan and Grimwade House staff, the Claymation project provides a learning experience where the children are making short films using animation techniques and plasticine figurines. “The Claymation project is designed to give students a real purpose to ‘tell their story’ through cooperative learning and problem solving activities. It also gives teachers a vehicle through which they engage students in storytelling using information and communication technologies,” said Head of Grimwade House Andrew Boyd. The ten week project will culminate in a film festival to showcase the talents of the students. The silent movies will be shown accompanied by music played by the School’s orchestra and created by students. The Year 4 students are creating a film which focuses on joke-telling, while Year 5 students are focusing on the theme of teamwork, creating a film about a group of dogs escaping from imprisonment by evil scientists. Each Year group is divided into four classes, with each class being responsible for one scene in the movie. Within each class there are seven smaller groups that create the events to make up a scene. Each small group is responsible for designing and making their own set, directing the scene, writing subtitles and filming the scene. “The Claymation project integrates learning outcomes between the various subjects of humanities, fine arts, literacy and eLearning,” said Andrew Boyd. “Claymation makes everyone take part so the group doesn’t rely on just one person. Claymation is so much fun! There are no rules to how creative you can be when you’re making your characters and props,” said Year 5 student Sophie.
