Discover the secrets of Grimwade House – Melbourne Grammar’s coeducational primary school

Melbourne Grammar School has a long and distinguished history in education, but not everyone knows that Melbourne Grammar has been educating girls in its coeducational primary school Grimwade House for 27 years.

Grimwade House is designed as a unique learning environment for girls and boys from Prep to Year 6.

Andrew Boyd, Head of Grimwade House, says a coeducational primary school environment aids in the early development of communication and values, as well as building a resilient child who can readily adapt to change.

“Our girls and boys are encouraged to harness all of their natural creativity and curiosity to go on a journey of discovery and self-awareness, fostering learning and leadership.”

An important part of Grimwade House’s extraordinary atmosphere is the Grimwade Club, an after-school activity program, which encourages students to interact and develop new skills outside of the regular curriculum.

“The Grimwade Club provides recreational activities and coaching for children after school,” explains Mr Boyd. “We aim to develop skills that will be used academically and in co-curricular activities, as well as providing a friendly and pleasant atmosphere.”

“The activities vary, but include gymnastics, speech and drama, chess, tennis, taekwondo, ballet, swimming, soccer and many others, giving our girls and boys the opportunity to cultivate new friendships and experience new interactions.”

“For the girls, moving to a different secondary school after Grimwade House gives them an excellent grounding for adaptability and flexibility in the future, and of course the boys experience this to a degree, moving to Wadhurst at the South Yarra campus of Melbourne Grammar.

“Change is something that is a part of life and preparing our students for it from an early age will make them better equipped to tackle what life throws their way in the future,” he said.

Grimwade House encourages its students to become independent and well-rounded individuals through a varied and comprehensive curriculum, ensuring the talents and self-esteem of each individual girl and boy are well nurtured.

Paul Sheahan, Headmaster of Melbourne Grammar School, takes great pride in Grimwade House’s learning environment.

“It is one thing to direct the academic career of a child, but it is another to present a student who has had a well-rounded and complete learning experience – the difference is remarkable.

“Melbourne Grammar’s ability to develop leadership capabilities and produce resilient, self-confident and academically talented students continues to underpin my belief in the manner in which the School forms its curriculum and the approach we take to encourage and develop every individual child’s abilities and emotional maturity.”
