Secondary students to lower environmental impact of their school

Students at Melbourne Grammar School are staging an MGS Live Concert to raise funds for environmental improvements at their School in an effort to minimise global warming and water wastage.

Over 50 Year 9 to 12 Melbourne Grammar students have formed a student-run Sustainable Living Improvement Committee. In the past few months the committee has assessed environmental sustainability around the School and is now raising money for the installation of water tanks and solar panels, to introduce the use of recycled paper and to retrofit compact fluorescent lights, sensors and timers in the School.

With the aim of raising over $12,000 to spend towards environmental initiatives, the students are holding a fundraising concert on Friday 7 September. MGS Live is a totally student organised concert and will include acts such as student bands, videos, debates and the Melbourne Grammar staff band.

In April well-known environmental consultant Rob Gell launched the committee’s energy conservation campaign which aims to reduce electricity usage in the school by five per cent. Following the campaign launch students have been monitoring and analysing the School’s electricity bills to see where energy can be saved.

Event Director and Year 12 student Charles Hopkins said, “Melbourne Grammar’s power to implement change, both in an infrastructural and habitual capacity, is such that many practical solutions are achievable. The main impediments for us as a student body are now apathy and finance. MGS Live aims to promote SLIC’s activities in the School, encourage students to take part in our initiatives and raise funds to implement structural change.”

“The students have demonstrated real leadership in getting this project off the ground. They really care about the sustainability of the world and are finding practical and meaningful solutions to community issues,” said Melbourne Grammar School Headmaster Paul Sheahan.
