Dog kennels to make lost dogs' Christmas

Thirty-three dog kennels have been designed, built and brightly decorated by Year 6 students at Melbourne Grammar School’s Grimwade House and given to The Lost Dogs’ Home in time to make some lost dogs’ Christmas.

The dog kennels were the focus of Science/Technology and Visual Arts projects for Year 6 girls and boys who learnt about design and built the kennels in teams. Linking in with English, students also made booklets that explain how to build a kennel.

“The project has been a great opportunity for students to develop an understanding and empathy for community issues while also being educational,” said Head of Grimwade House Andrew Boyd.

“It is fantastic to see how enthusiastic the students are about this project which teaches children practical ways they can contribute to the community,” said Mr Boyd.

Part of a learning program which fosters leadership and responsibility, students work on problem solving techniques and experience a ‘hands on’ approach to problem solving by undertaking projects like this kennel initiative.

The kennels starred in an exhibition along with a performance by the Waggles Dog Show.
