Grimwade House students connect with the past at Sovereign Hill

Around 680 students from Melbourne Grammar School’s coeducational primary school, Grimwade House, stepped back in time to celebrate the School’s 150th birthday with a visit to Sovereign Hill.

On Monday 14 April, the entire primary school boarded 14 buses and made the journey to the goldfields in just one of a series of celebrations for Melbourne Grammar School’s Sesquicentenary milestone.

Head of Grimwade House Andrew Boyd said the excursion gave students a taste of what school was like for students 150 years ago.

“Grimwade House students were relocated to Sovereign Hill to see what life was like in Victoria around the time of the foundation of Melbourne Grammar in 1858,” Mr Boyd said. “The excursion was an exciting way for students to gain new understandings.”

Students spent the day viewing a gold pour demonstration, taking self-guided mine tours, trying their luck at gold panning and meandering through Sovereign Hill experiencing life in the goldfields.
