Application procedure

We welcome applications for a Melbourne Grammar School scholarship or bursary. Entrance scholarships are available to students starting in Year 7 and Year 9. We also offer dedicated bursary places for Indigenous students.

We encourage families to contact the Admissions Office to discuss eligibility, availability and the application procedure as a first step in the process. This is particularly important for families interested in an Indigenous bursary or Boarding scholarship.

Applying for an annual entrance scholarship

Applications for 2020 Academic and Music scholarships are now open (with 2020 being the year the student would enter Year 7 or Year 9). Families interested in securing a Boarding scholarship should contact the Admissions Office.

Eligibility

Entrance scholarships are open to new and existing local Melbourne Grammar School students when entering Year 7 or Year 9. See individual scholarships for more eligibility information.

Students planning to study at Melbourne Grammar School on a student visa are not eligible.

Entrance scholarship application process

Step one
Application

October, 15 months prior to entry – January the year before entry

Each October, we open entrance scholarship applications for the intake 15 months ahead (i.e. scholarships advertised in October 2018 are for 2020).

Applications are open from October to the following January, through the School website.

Step two
Testing and shortlisting

February the year before entry

Applicants sit a scholarship examination at Melbourne Grammar School. Boys entering Year 7 sit in Year 6; boys entering Year 9 sit in Year 8.

Depending on the scholarship, we may also ask for supporting documents or other information.

Applicants are then shortlisted.

Step three
Interview and offer

February/March the year before entry

Shortlisted applicants will be invited to an interview with the Headmaster. Successful applicants are notified very soon after the interview.

Step four
Acceptance of offer

One week after offer

To secure a scholarship, families must submit formal enrolment documentation and pay an enrolment fee within one week after the offer has been made.
