THURSDAY 3 JUNE 2021 | 7.00PM - 8.00PM

A Reconciliation Week Event
Melbourne Grammar School parent, Nova Peris, is no stranger to breaking new ground. When she won Olympic gold with the Hockeyroos in 1996, Nova became not only our first Indigenous Olympic champion but the first mother to be a gold medalist for Australia since 1956.

We invite you to join us as Nova speaks of her journey and the many people who have inspired her through their wisdom, courage and ability to overcome adversity.

ABOUT NOVA PERIS

After winning gold with the Hockeyroos, Nova worked her way onto the international athletics scene as a talented sprinter in the Australian team at the 1997 World Championships and a year later crowned Commonwealth champion. By 2000, she represented Australia in multiple disciplines at the Sydney Olympics – marking her as one of our finest athletes.

Nova became the first Indigenous woman to be elected to Federal Parliament in 2013. During her maiden speech, she talked of having strong cultural and spiritual ties to her country. She is a descendant of the Gija people of the East Kimberley and the Yawuru people of the West Kimberley through her mother, and the Iwatja people from Western Arnhem Land through her father.

In 2020, Nova was honoured with the Australian Awards for Excellence in Women’s Leadership, acknowledging her ongoing advocacy in the areas of domestic violence, suicide awareness and gender equality for women in sport and politics.
