John Brumby

The Hon John Brumby is the current Premier of Victoria and has been its longest serving Treasurer. Brumby graduated in commerce from The University of Melbourne in 1974 and then attained a Diploma of Education from the State College Victoria at Rusden.

He was elected to the Federal Parliament as the Member for Bendigo in 1983. During his seven years in Federal Parliament he was Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Employment, Education and Training.

In 1993 Brumby entered the Victorian Parliament and was Leader of the Opposition until 1999. After Labor was elected to Government he served as a senior Minister, most notably as Victoria's longest serving Treasurer, where over seven years he oversaw economic and regulatory reform. As Minister for Regional and Rural Development he established Australia's first fund to develop regional infrastructure.

In 2002 Brumby became Victoria's first Minister for Innovation. He was influential in the development of the Australian Synchrotron in Victoria, a facility that will attract local and international scientists in areas such as medical and environmental research.

He has received a National Leadership Award from the Tourism and Transport Forum Australia for his contribution to tourism and infrastructure development as well as Research Australia's Leadership and Innovation Award and the Centenary Medal. Brumby became Premier of Victoria in 2007.


Melbourne Grammar School marked its sesquicentenary in 2008. As part of the celebrations, a Talents Committed Exhibition was staged. This exhibition recognised 150 Old Melburnians who have made a difference to the City of Melbourne, the State of Victoria and the wider community in Australia and overseas.
