Christopher Langford

An outstanding AFL footballer, Chris Langford captained the Hawthorn Football Club and won four Premierships. Langford graduated in architecture from The University of Melbourne in 1987.

A champion full back known for his strength and consistency, he was an important member of Hawthorn's 1986, 1988, 1989 and 1991 Premiership teams. He also won four Night Premierships with Hawthorn and was Club Captain in the 1994 season. Langford was selected for the Victorian State of Origin side in eight consecutive years. He was an All Australian in 1987, 1988, 1989 and 1994.

In 1996 Langford was a vocal and highly visible opponent of the proposed merger with the Melbourne Football Club, an option which was later rejected by his Club. Langford retired from football in 1997 having played over 300 games in the AFL and VFL. He was awarded the Australian Sports Medal for his contribution to Australian Football and is named in Hawthorn's Team of the Century.

He is currently a Director of Spyglass Property.


Melbourne Grammar School marked its sesquicentenary in 2008. As part of the celebrations, a Talents Committed Exhibition was staged. This exhibition recognised 150 Old Melburnians who have made a difference to the City of Melbourne, the State of Victoria and the wider community in Australia and overseas.
