Approximately 140 places are available for new students in Year 7 at Melbourne Grammar School. This means that about 70% of a Year 7 cohort will be brand new students to the School.
This figure excludes those Year 6 boys who will transition from Grimwade House, our co-educational primary school.
What is the size of the Year 7 cohort?
The Year 7 cohort has around 200 students, comprising of 10 classes of approximately 20 students each.

Will my son be invited to sit the Entrance Test?
The criteria for invitations to sit the Entrance Test include age at time of application, and family and sibling association with Melbourne Grammar. Once we commence the process of inviting students to the Entrance Test, further feedback can be provided.
What indication might I get about whether or not my son will receive an offer?
We take into account several criteria when considering offer, and apply our admissions processes fairly and consistently to all applicants. As Entrance Testing is one of the criteria, we cannot provide an indication on the likelihood of an offer until this testing is held.
Can my son commence earlier than Year 7?
To add your son to an earlier waitlist, please request this by contacting the Admissions Office.
Can I visit the School?
As a part of the Year 7 admissions process, the Open Campus Event will be your opportunity to visit the School, view the facilities, and gain an in-depth understanding of the values, vision, broader School program directly from the Headmaster, Head of Senior School, and Head of Wadhurst.
There will be several key staff available to answer your questions and provide guidance on the topics which matter most to you. You will also hear from current students and their experiences at Wadhurst, including what it was like starting at the campus.
What scholarships are available?
Academic, Music and Boarding Scholarships are offered via the Annual Scholarship Exam in February prior to Year 7 or Year 9 commencement.
General Excellence Scholarships are also available for students entering Years 7-11. These scholarships are for students who would not otherwise have the means to attend the School due to their financial circumstances, and are for students who demonstrate academic potential and talent in sport or other areas of leadership or service.
Can my son also sit the Scholarship Exam?
All students are welcome to undertake the Scholarship Exam, irrespective of whether or not that have an application to Melbourne Grammar School or are finalised for a position.
When is the Scholarship Exam for Year 7?
The Annual Scholarship Exam for Academic, Music and Boarding Scholarships takes place one year prior, early in a student’s Year 6. Registrations will open the November prior. Please note that this is a separate process to general admissions via the Academic Entrance Test. Further information can be accessed here.
Will being confirmed as an enrolled student impact my son’s scholarship consideration?
Your son being finalised for a Year 7 general place will not impact his scholarship consideration.
What is the next intake after Year 7?
Year 9. However, this is a much smaller intake of approximately 30-40 students.
Does my son need to interview?
Interviews are not a standard step in our admissions process for all applicants. However, we will interview some applicants at our discretion, if we wish to learn more about a student or capture additional information based on his Entrance Test results or supporting documents.
You will be notified after the Entrance Test if you are required to interview, noting that progressing to an interview is not a guarantee that an offer will be made.
What will happen if I am offered a position?
If you are offered a position, you will have one week to respond to the offer. An offer can be accepted by signing and agreeing to the School’s Conditions of Entry, and with payment of a non-refundable enrolment fee. This amount is not credited toward any tuition fees.
Approximately 12 months prior to commencement, you will be asked to pay a Tuition Fee Deposit to demonstrate your intention to commence. This amount is in addition to your previously paid enrolment fee. This non-refundable deposit will be credited towards Term I tuition fees.
If I accept a position and later wish to withdraw, what should I do?
If your circumstances change you can withdraw from your finalised position by advising the Admissions Office. If this notice is provided after your payment of the Tuition Fee Deposit, please note that your deposit is non-refundable and cannot be transferred to another year or to another one of your children.
If I am offered a position and do not wish to accept it, what are my options?
You will have the following options:
- Defer application to our next intake of Year 9, noting that this is a significantly smaller intake. Places are reviewed in the year prior to entry with the same criteria for Year 7. It is important to understand that an offer at Year 7 is not a guarantee of a future offer at a later point.
- Cancel the application.
