Professor Stephen Cordner is a leading expert in forensic medicine who has made a prominent contribution to human rights in international court cases.

Cordner graduated in medicine from the University of Melbourne in 1977 before taking up a position as a forensic pathologist at Guys Hospital in London. He returned to Melbourne in 1987 to become Foundation Professor of Forensic Medicine at Monash University and Director of the Victorian Institute of Forensic Medicine. His work in forensic medicine and human rights has taken Cordner to East Timor, the former Yugoslavia and Iraq. He has been an expert witness in prominent court cases to assist the examination of incidents in conflicts. He has also served on the International Committee of the Red Cross in Geneva.

Cordner's contribution to forensic medicine has been recognised internationally. He has been awarded the Medal of the Royal College of Pathologists of Australia and the Medal of the World Association of Societies of Pathology.

In 2005 Cordner was honoured as a Member of the Order of Australia for his contribution to the development of forensic pathology in Australia and internationally.


Melbourne Grammar School marked its sesquicentenary in 2008. As part of the celebrations, a Talents Committed Exhibition was staged. This exhibition recognised 150 Old Melburnians who have made a difference to the City of Melbourne, the State of Victoria and the wider community in Australia and overseas.
