A sportsman and adventurer, Ben Dodwell represented Australia in rowing at three Olympic Games. A member of six National Championship winning crews, Dodwell was selected for the Australian Men's Eight which reached the finals at both the 1992 and 1996 Olympic Games.
He also rowed for the Coxless Four, which came second at the 1998 World Cup and third at the 1999 World Cup. In 1999 the Coxless Four won a Gold Medal at the Commonwealth Championships and a Silver Medal at the World Championships. The crew went on to win a Bronze Medal at the 2000 Sydney Olympics. Dodwell has also scaled Switzerland's Matterhorn and sailed in the Sydney to Hobart yacht race.
He has been appointed as an Australia Day Ambassador and is a patron of The University of Melbourne's Jack Brockhoff Plastic Surgery Research Unit.
Melbourne Grammar School marked its sesquicentenary in 2008. As part of the celebrations, a Talents Committed Exhibition was staged. This exhibition recognised 150 Old Melburnians who have made a difference to the City of Melbourne, the State of Victoria and the wider community in Australia and overseas.
